We are a family that uses our basement a lot. We have a ranch-style home, and while the basement is cozy and great for guests, it is not exactly warm or bright.

Here are a few ideas I have found to add light into even the darkest corners of your home. I can’t wait to incorporate some of these ideas into our basement space. Hopefully you might find something to work for your home too.

Wall Art

When you don’t have large windows, you have to work with the walls you have to create an illusion of light. An oversized portraits of an exterior scene does wonders for an indoor space. It’s not exactly a big, bright window, but it’s probably the second best thing. If you can’t find an art piece you love, try using actual window panes with mirrors instead of clear glass. You can even add curtains to give the room the illusion of a window with a pop of color from the curtains. Drapery behind the furniture also gives the look of windows, even if they aren’t there.

Color

Even if you’re working in a basement, that doesn’t mean it needs to look like a cave. Oftentimes, bright and bold colors can add light into a space and give visual interest to the rest of the room. Color is one of the best ways to keep a room from looking drab or dull. If you like the dark look, try adding a pop of metallic accents in the paint or decor to bring an interesting light to the space.light-2

Accent Lighting

If you don’t have a lot of natural light in the space, use the light you have very strategically. Add light around artwork, and accent lighting around the room so there are no overly dark areas, and there is an even amount of light filling the space. When adding accent lighting, make sure it fits with the room, and you’re using the right bulbs to avoid looking like a haunted house. The brightest bulbs possible bring light to the room, while darker bulbs can bring a soft, romantic feel.light-5

Plants

Plants give a room life, and generally speaking, where there are plants, there is light. So adding plants (even fake ones) give the illusion of a space that has more natural light. Faux plants have come a long way and can look beautiful without looking fake. You can find lots of resources on picking plants that look nice and add a softness to the space.light-3
